Mobile Devices Heuristic Evaluation Instructions

Heuristic Evaluation for Mobile Phones Instructions

This information sheet is designed for the person who is going to complete the Heuristic Evaluation of the mobile phone. This person will be referred to as the Evaluator. Before a Heuristic Evaluation can take place the Evaluator needs to read this document.

Requirements:

The following are needed in order to complete a heuristic evaluation on a mobile phone:

Note: These forms have been designed to be completed electronically.  Therefore a computer with a word processing and spreadsheet package is needed.

Procedure

Useful Tips:

Completing the Heuristic Principles

Using the heuristic evaluation for mobile phones (Hardware and Software) as a reference guide, the Evaluator needs to complete the comments section for each point.

Once the comments section for a point is complete the Evaluator should cross-reference their answer with the checkpoint. If the answer doesn’t match the statement then the Evaluator should fail that point and put an "F" in the "Pass/Fail" column. If the answer does relate to the statement the Evaluator should pass the point by putting a "P" in the "Pass/Fail" column.

Functional Requirements for Heuristic Evaluation for Mobile Phones (Software)

Mobile phones contain a wide range of functionality, which may vary from one device to another. Therefore the top functions that users frequently use in their mobile phones should be evaluated when completing the Heuristic Evaluation for Mobile Phones (Software). It is vital that these frequently used functions are evaluated when performing the Heuristic Evaluation.

The Evaluator should explore each function prior to completing the Heuristic Evaluation. If the Evaluator finds any problems they should be noted under the appropriate Heuristic principle when they complete the form. If a problem does not fit into a particular Heuristic principle, it should be noted under the additional comments section at the end of the document.

Completing the Recommendations and Additional Comments Section

Recommendations

Each point has a priority rating, high or low.

If the Evaluator has scored a fail for any “high” priority point, the mobile device should be rejected until the manufacturer has modified it.

If the Evaluator has scored a fail for a “Low” priority point the mobile device should be evaluated further on the grounds that it may not be suitable to end users.

Only if the Evaluator has scored a pass for all point should the device be accepted at this stage and no further evaluation is needed.

The Evaluator should signify their recommendation by putting agree next to the appropriate statement on the Recommendations and Additional Comments Sheet of the Completion Form.

Note: These results and any recommendations are dependant on the results from the Heuristic Evaluation.

Additional Comments

The evaluator should use this section to add anything about the device they feel is relevant to Heuristic Evaluation.

Note: If either the Software or Hardware Heuristic Evaluation has already been completed, the conclusion of the results from that evaluation should be recorded here. If either the Software or Hardware Heuristic Evaluation has not been completed the results should be added once it has been completed.

Evaluation Method and Samples

Should the Evaluator recommend that the product receive further evaluation, the Evaluator should use this section to identify the user evaluation that would be the most appropriate for this device. They should refer to the Evaluation Methodologies and Evaluation Methodologies Guidelines for more information.

Note: Further evaluation should only take place if either or both the Heuristic Evaluation for Mobile Phones (Hardware) or the Heuristic Evaluation for Mobile Phones (Software) have deemed that the device should go for further evaluation and either form did not reject the device based on the results.

The Evaluator should signify their recommendation by putting yes next to the appropriate evaluation method and the number of samples required next to that evaluation method on the Recommendations and Additional Comments Sheet of the Completion Form.

Finally the Evaluator(s) who completed the Heuristic Evaluation should input their details and the date when the evaluation was completed.
